Door to door flood awareness
Visit Ancholme, Visit Welland-Glen, Visit Great Ouse
2 March 2010
Homes and businesses at risk of flooding in parts of Lincolnshire and Bedfordshire are to be visited by Environment Agency representatives during March.
Their visits will follow on from letters advising them that their properties are at risk of flooding and automatically signing them up to receive a warning when flooding is predicted.
In response to the Pitt Review into flooding after the 2007 floods, the Agency is now automatically sending warnings to properties at risk with residents having to ‘opt out' rather than ‘opt in' to receive them.
The visits to over 3,000 homes and businesses in Kempston, Brigg and Lincoln will take place throughout March and will explain the opt-out service, encourage registering for the full service and help residents become more prepared for flooding.
Teams of two carrying ID and wearing Environment Agency branded jackets will call at the properties between 3-8pm and will not ask to be invited in. Residents will be asked to help fill in questionnaires on the doorstep. All door knocking will be finished by 26 March.
Those who want to sign up for the full Floodline Warnings Direct service will be able to do so on the day.
Laura Harrison, Community Engagement Officer at the Environment Agency, said: "We have been working hard with residents in areas at risk to help them prepare and be able to respond quickly and effectively to flooding.
"This exercise will complement the opt-out flood warnings project and will help move people from being flood aware to being flood prepared."
Properties being visited are:
Kempston - 2nd - 26th March;
Brigg - 15th - 26th March
Lincoln - 15th - 26th March
